LIGHTER, MORE AGILE - THE NEW S 1000 XR

Changes, both large and small, ensure the 2020 model is better in every way

With a newly developed engine, suspension and transmission, and weighing in at 22 lbs. less than the previous model, the new BMW S 1000 XR has been thoroughly optimized from the ground up for 2020.

Radically lighter and more agile than its predecessor, the S 1000 XR for 2020 is powered by a newly developed 999cc, water-cooled, inline-four engine developing 84 lb.-ft. of torque at 9,250rpm and 165 hp at 11,000rpm. The 4th, 5th and 6th gears now have longer ratios in order to reduce noise, fuel consumption and engine speed level.

As for creature comforts, a new layout of the main frame, fuel tank flanks and body parts result in updated bodywork offering an even more dynamic design, optimized aerodynamics and even further enhanced weather protection. This also results in a new ergonomic rider triangle between the handlebar ends, seat surface and footrests.

Of course, the bike comes with a full suite of Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS), including ABS Pro for controlled corner braking, Dynamic Traction Control with wheelie control function (DTC), Hill Start Control Pro, Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR) for smoother downshifts, Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) for varying loads and roads, a 6.5-inch TFT screen complete with connectivity, full LED lighting, and Riding Modes Pro with a choice of four modes - Rain, Road, Dynamic, and a new, fully configurable Dynamic Pro mode.

“It’s always difficult for a successor model to improve on a multiple test winner like the S 1000 XR,” says Ralf Mölleken, Project Manager. “We’ve gone through a great deal of trouble to make changes – both large and small – to ensure the XR is a little better in every way.”

The new S 1000 XR will be available in a choice of Ice Grey or Racing Red/White Aluminum.
